Support thoughtful reading of There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom by Louis Sachar, a novel following Bradley Chalkers, a boy whose challenging behaviour keeps others at a distance. Through a developing friendship and the support of a caring school counsellor, Bradley begins to see himself differently. The story invites readers to look beyond behaviour, question first impressions and consider how kindness, trust and acceptance can help people grow.

These comprehensive guided reading plans support teacher-led discussion through questions exploring comprehension, inference, language, text organisation and author’s purpose. Students are encouraged to draw on evidence, explain their thinking and consider different perspectives. Conscious communication questions explore characters’ feelings and needs, nurturing empathy and a compassionate classroom, while suggested response activities extend understanding and strengthen connections between reading and writing.

Themes explored: friendship, kindness, empathy, self-esteem and self-acceptance, belonging, bullying and social acceptance, loneliness, trust, personal growth, second chances, judging others, supportive relationships.
