The Two Fields is a Year 7–8 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Author Craft and the week focus Contrast. Through the description of two very different fields divided by a simple fence, students investigate how the author uses contrasting settings, imagery, juxtaposition and symbolism to explore ideas about individuality, conformity, freedom, curiosity and choosing your own path.
Across five short lessons, students progress from vocabulary and word choice to analysing author craft, making inferences, exploring themes, and constructing evidence-based PEEL responses.

Students will learn how authors use contrast to make differences more noticeable and communicate deeper ideas. By comparing the organised, predictable field with the wild and freely growing landscape beyond the fence, students explore how settings and objects can represent different ways of thinking, living and making choices.
By the end of the week, students will be able to identify significant contrasts, explain how contrasting details work together, interpret possible symbolic meanings, and discuss how these author choices contribute to meaning, theme and purpose.
