Description

Help students read between the lines and explore how authors reveal character feelings through small actions, expressions and changes in posture.

The Ribbon is a Year 3–4 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Inference and the weekly focus Character Feelings. When a blue ribbon is pinned to a classroom art display, Ella’s quiet response offers clues about what the moment means to her. Students investigate how the author suggests pride, achievement and growing confidence without naming these feelings directly.

Across five short lessons, students progress from vocabulary and word choice to interpreting character actions, making supported inferences, exploring author’s purpose and themes, and constructing simple evidence-based written responses.

This pack includes:

  • Original mentor text
  • Five days of structured learning
  • Explicit WALTs and success criteria

  • Setting and imagery analysis

Students will learn how authors use carefully selected details to help readers visualise a character and shape the way they respond to a place.

By the end of the week, students will be able to identify important details, explain what they help readers imagine, make supported inferences about a character's interest in a situation, and discuss how actions can contribute to mood, meaning and author's purpose.

Key Learning: Students will learn how carefully selected details help readers understand feelings that remain unstated. By exploring Ella’s pause, the way she smooths her painting, her taller posture and her lingering smile, students consider how actions can suggest pride and growing confidence. They also explore how the blue ribbon may symbolise recognition and achievement.

By the end of the week, students will be able to identify clues about a character’s feelings, explain the evidence behind an inference, consider alternative interpretations, and discuss how an author’s choices contribute to a text’s meaning.
