Support thoughtful reading of The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, a novel told through the eyes of Ivan, a gorilla living in a shopping mall. When a young elephant named Ruby arrives, Ivan begins to see their lives differently and finds a new purpose in protecting her future. The story invites readers to explore friendship, promises and the power of art, while considering animals’ needs and our responsibility to care for them.

These comprehensive guided reading plans support teacher-led discussion through questions exploring comprehension, inference, language, text organisation and author’s purpose. Students are encouraged to draw on evidence, explain their thinking and consider different perspectives. Conscious communication questions explore characters’ feelings and needs, nurturing empathy and a compassionate classroom, while suggested response activities extend understanding and strengthen connections between reading and writing.

Themes explored: friendship, kindness and compassion, animal welfare and captivity, freedom, promises and responsibility, courage, hope, identity and belonging, memory, loss and grief, art and self-expression, creating change.
