Help students move beyond surface-level understanding and explore how authors use dialogue to reveal character and communicate important ideas.
The Missing Jersey is a Year 5–6 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Author Craft and the week focus Dialogue. Students will learn how authors use dialogue to reveal character without directly telling readers what a person is like. By examining what Mia says, what she chooses to do, and how Sam responds, students explore how small conversations can reveal values, motivations and relationships.
By the end of the week, students will be able to identify important dialogue, explain what it reveals about a character, make supported inferences using words and actions, and discuss how dialogue contributes to meaning, theme and author's purpose.
By the end of the week, students will be able to identify words with different connotations, explain the ideas and feelings connected with those words, make supported inferences about perspective, and discuss how word choice contributes to meaning, theme and author's purpose.
