Description
Help students move beyond surface-level understanding and explore how authors reveal character motivation through actions, patterns and implied meaning.
The Library Book is a Year 5–6 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Inference and the week focus Character Motivation. Through the story of a teacher who quietly leaves a different library book on Ella's desk each week, students investigate how readers can infer what motivates a character even when their thoughts and intentions are never directly explained.
Across five short lessons, students progress from vocabulary and word choice to gathering clues, inferring motivation, exploring themes, and constructing expanded evidence-based responses.

- Students will learn how metaphors allow authors to communicate complex ideas through familiar images and experiences.
Students will learn how a character's repeated actions can provide clues about what motivates them. By examining the teacher's carefully chosen books, quiet behaviour and decision not to seek recognition, students explore how encouragement can be shown through thoughtful actions rather than spoken directly.
By the end of the week, students will be able to infer character motivation from evidence, combine clues from across a text, explain unspoken understanding between characters, and connect character actions to wider themes and author's purpose.
