Support thoughtful reading of The Last Tuatara by Des Hunt, an adventure following twins Jason and Jessy as they investigate the secrets of Jelly Mountain on their family’s remote New Zealand farm. When a discovery is threatened by someone seeking personal gain, their curiosity becomes a dangerous mission to protect a species from extinction. The story invites readers to explore courage, responsibility and the choices people make when the natural world is at stake.

These learning contracts combine comprehension and inference, higher order thinking, vocabulary, writing and creative responses. Conscious communication activities explore characters’ feelings and needs, while reflection prompts encourage students to consider their own learning. QR codes and clickable links provide guidance for selected activities, supporting growing independence within your classroom reading programme.

Themes explored: conservation, protecting wildlife, endangered species and extinction, human impact on the environment, greed and exploitation, courage, curiosity and discovery, family and sibling relationships, cooperation, responsibility, choices and consequences.
