The Hut is a Year 5–6 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Author Craft and the week focus Connotation. Through the story of an old hut viewed in very different ways, students investigate how words such as run-down, historic, neglected, enduring and faithful can create contrasting impressions of the same place.

Across five short lessons, students progress from vocabulary and word choice to analysing author craft, making inferences, exploring themes, and constructing evidence-based written responses.

By the end of the week, students will be able to identify words with different connotations, explain the ideas and feelings connected with those words, make supported inferences about perspective, and discuss how word choice contributes to meaning, theme and author's purpose.
