Description

Help students move beyond surface-level understanding and explore how authors use sentence structure to control pace, build tension and communicate deeper meaning.

The Dive is a Year 7–8 Five-Day Text Exploration resource designed around the pack focus Author Craft and the week focus Sentence Structure. Through the story of a student standing on a high diving platform and facing the decision to step forward, students investigate how the author uses varied sentence lengths, fragments, pacing and contrast to immerse readers in a moment of uncertainty and courage.

Across five short lessons, students progress from vocabulary and word choice to analysing author craft, making inferences, exploring themes, and constructing evidence-based PEEL responses.

Students will learn how authors deliberately vary sentence length and structure to change the pace of a text and shape the reader's experience. By examining the contrast between longer descriptive passages, short sentences and single-word fragments, students explore how sentence structure can stretch a moment, build anticipation and place emphasis on significant actions and decisions.

By the end of the week, students will be able to identify significant structural choices, explain how they affect pace and tension, interpret what they reveal about a character's experience, and discuss how these author choices contribute to meaning, theme and purpose.

Key Learning: Students explore how authors use sentence structure to control the rhythm and pace of a text, discovering how longer descriptions, short sentences, deliberate fragments and carefully placed pauses can slow down a moment, build tension and draw attention to important decisions. Through Ethan's experience, students consider how courage can exist in quiet, deeply personal moments and how a single action can represent facing fear, taking a risk and choosing to move forward.
