Support thoughtful reading of The Bad Beginning by Lemony Snicket, the first novel in A Series of Unfortunate Events. After losing their parents, Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire are placed in the care of Count Olaf, who schemes to steal their inheritance. Blending mystery, dark humour and a distinctive narrative voice, the story invites readers to explore how the siblings use their knowledge, ingenuity and loyalty to confront danger when the adults around them fail to help.

These learning contracts combine comprehension and inference, higher order thinking, vocabulary, writing and creative responses. Conscious communication activities explore characters’ feelings and needs, while reflection prompts encourage students to consider their own learning. QR codes and clickable links provide guidance for selected activities, supporting growing independence within your classroom reading programme.

Themes explored: family and sibling relationships, loss and grief, courage, resilience, resourcefulness and problem-solving, knowledge and learning, greed, deception, injustice, abuse of power, trust and responsibility, cooperation.
