Support thoughtful reading of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan, the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. When Percy discovers that he is the son of Poseidon, he enters a world where Greek gods and monsters exist alongside modern life. Accused of stealing Zeus’s lightning bolt, he sets out with his friends to uncover the truth and prevent a war between the gods. The story invites readers to explore identity, loyalty and the strengths that can emerge from feeling different.

These learning contracts combine comprehension and inference, higher order thinking, vocabulary, writing and creative responses. Conscious communication activities explore characters’ feelings and needs, while reflection prompts encourage students to consider their own learning. QR codes and clickable links provide guidance for selected activities, supporting growing independence within your classroom reading programme.

Themes explored: identity and belonging, friendship and loyalty, family relationships, courage, trust and betrayal, difference and self-acceptance, recognising strengths, dyslexia and ADHD, Greek mythology, heroism, power and responsibility, choices and consequences, teamwork.
