Description

Help students consolidate their sentence-building skills and develop greater control, detail and sophistication in their writing through this engaging five-day Sentence Explorations pack focusing on Longer Simple Sentences.

Designed for Years 7–8, this pack brings together students’ previous learning about complete sentences, adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases. Rather than introducing another individual sentence feature, students learn how these tools can work together to expand a single complete idea with purposeful, relevant detail. Through the authentic context of Volcanoes, students take on the role of volcanologists, developing short observations into detailed field report sentences.

Across five carefully structured lessons, students progress from recognising the difference between short and longer simple sentences to deliberately adding adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases. Through explicit teaching, guided practice and independent application, students discover that a simple sentence does not have to be short – and that effective sentence expansion is about adding meaningful detail while maintaining one clear, complete idea.

This pack includes:

  • Five days of structured sentence instruction
  • Explicit WALTs and success criteria
  • Clear teacher modelling (I Do)
  • Guided practice activities (We Do)
  • Independent application tasks (You Do)
  • Daily reflection prompts
  • Vocabulary banks
  • Cumulative learning reminders
  • Final independent writing task
  • Simple margin marking codes for feedback

Perfect for:

  • Whole-class writing lessons
  • Structured Literacy programmes
  • Literacy rotations
  • Independent literacy tasks
  • Small group teaching
  • Writing intervention
  • Sentence fluency development

Students investigate how a simple sentence can be expanded while still expressing one complete idea. Beginning with sentences such as The lava flowed, they explore how carefully chosen adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases can add precision and create a clearer picture. As the week progresses, students combine these sentence-building tools, applying their learning within an authentic Volcanologist Field Report and transforming simple observations into detailed, purposeful sentences.

The week culminates in an independent writing task where students write five detailed observations about a volcanic eruption, consolidating the learning developed across the first five packs. Importantly, students learn that stronger writing is not simply about adding more words, but about choosing details that add meaning. As the final pack in this stage, Longer Simple Sentences provides an important bridge from expanding one complete idea to the next stage of learning: connecting two complete ideas to create compound sentences.

Key Learning: Students consolidate their understanding of simple sentences by exploring how one complete idea can be expanded with purposeful detail. They learn to combine adjectives, adverbs and prepositional phrases while maintaining a clear subject, verb and complete idea. Students progress from distinguishing between short and longer simple sentences to independently constructing detailed observations within an authentic field-report context. Importantly, they learn that sentence sophistication comes not from simply making sentences longer, but from making deliberate choices about which details strengthen meaning and help the reader build a clearer picture.
