Support thoughtful reading of Journey to Tangiwai by David Hill, a historical novel told through the diary of Peter Cotterill, a boy growing up in Napier in 1953. As Peter records family life, friendships and his experiences in the Scouts, his year leads towards a Christmas Eve train journey and the Tangiwai disaster. The story invites readers to explore courage, community and the ways significant events shape ordinary lives.

These learning contracts combine comprehension and inference, higher order thinking, vocabulary, writing and creative responses. Conscious communication activities explore characters’ feelings and needs, while reflection prompts encourage students to consider their own learning. QR codes and clickable links provide guidance for selected activities, supporting growing independence within your classroom reading programme.

Themes explored: family, friendship, community, courage, resilience, growing up, responsibility, cooperation, social class and inequality, loss and grief, helping others, disasters and survival, New Zealand history, change and its impact.
