Support thoughtful reading of Dawn Raid by Pauline (Vaeluaga) Smith, a historical novel told through Sofia’s diary as she navigates family, school and growing up in 1970s New Zealand. As Sofia becomes aware of the injustice facing Pacific communities and experiences the impact of the Dawn Raids, she begins to recognise the importance of speaking up. The story invites readers to explore identity, belonging and the courage of people working together for change.
These learning contracts combine comprehension and inference, higher order thinking, vocabulary, writing and creative responses. Conscious communication activities explore characters’ feelings and needs, while reflection prompts encourage students to consider their own learning. QR codes and clickable links provide guidance for selected activities, supporting growing independence within your classroom reading programme.
Themes explored: cultural identity, family and community, belonging, growing up, racism and discrimination, social justice, human rights, migration, courage, activism and protest, finding your voice, media bias, Pacific histories, the Dawn Raids, the Polynesian Panthers, Aotearoa New Zealand history.
