Students begin by investigating how and can be used to join related ideas, discovering how conjunctions help writers connect information and create sentences that flow more smoothly. Using an engaging Ocean Adventures theme, students explore how two ideas can be combined using and, identifying what is being connected and considering whether the ideas logically belong together.

As the week progresses, students move from identifying and joining ideas to making deliberate choices about how and can improve their sentences. They practise combining related actions, details and information while avoiding unnecessary repetition. By Day 4, students apply their skills within an authentic Ocean Explorer’s Log context, transforming simple observations and notes into connected, detailed sentences while drawing on previous learning about complete sentences, adjectives, adverbs and where and when details alongside their new understanding of joining ideas with and.
