Description

Help students consolidate their sentence-building skills and develop greater control over the choices they make as writers through this engaging five-day Sentence Explorations pack focusing on Building Stronger Sentences.

Designed for Years 5–6, this pack brings together everything students have learned across Stage 1 of the Sentence Explorations sequence. Rather than introducing another individual sentence feature, students learn how complete sentences, adjectives, adverbs, where details and when details can work together to create clear, detailed and purposeful writing. Through the engaging theme of Volcanoes, students take on the role of scientists, developing simple observations into detailed Volcano Scientist Log entries.

Across five carefully structured lessons, students progress from identifying familiar sentence-building tools to combining them independently and making increasingly deliberate decisions about the details they include. Through explicit teaching, guided practice and independent application, students discover that stronger writing is not simply about adding more words – it is about choosing the right words and details to communicate an idea effectively.

This pack includes:

  • Five days of structured sentence instruction
  • Explicit WALTs and success criteria
  • Clear teacher modelling (I Do)
  • Guided practice activities (We Do)
  • Independent application tasks (You Do)
  • Daily reflection prompts
  • Vocabulary banks
  • Cumulative learning reminders
  • Final independent writing task
  • Simple margin marking codes for feedback

Perfect for:

  • Whole-class writing lessons
  • Structured Literacy programmes
  • Literacy rotations
  • Independent literacy tasks
  • Small group teaching
  • Independent writing practice
  • Sentence fluency development

Students begin by revisiting the sentence-building tools they have developed across Stage 1: adjectives, adverbs, where details and when details. They investigate how these features can strengthen a complete sentence, comparing simple constructions such as The volcano erupted with more developed sentences such as The enormous volcano erupted violently during the night.

As the week progresses, the emphasis shifts from simply adding details to choosing the most effective details. Students compare different vocabulary and sentence choices, explain why one option creates a stronger picture than another, and begin recognising that effective writers make deliberate decisions according to the meaning they want to communicate.

Key Learning: Students consolidate the sentence-building skills developed throughout Stage 1 by learning to select and combine adjectives, adverbs, where details and when details within complete sentences. They progress from identifying individual tools to improving sentences, comparing possible choices and independently applying combinations of features within an authentic writing context. Importantly, students learn that strong writing is not about adding as many words as possible – it is about choosing words and details that clarify meaning and help readers understand and imagine what is happening. This prepares students to move from expanding individual ideas to connecting and developing relationships between ideas in Stage 2.
