Support thoughtful reading of Amina by J.L. Powers, a novel in the Through My Eyes series about a young artist growing up in Mogadishu, Somalia, during civil war. As conflict threatens her family, Amina uses art and poetry to express herself and make sense of the world around her. The story invites readers to explore courage, family and freedom of expression, with teacher guidance supporting sensitive discussion of the impact of war on children’s lives.

These comprehensive guided reading plans support teacher-led discussion through questions exploring comprehension, inference, language, text organisation and author’s purpose. Students are encouraged to draw on evidence, explain their thinking and consider different perspectives. Conscious communication questions explore characters’ feelings and needs, nurturing empathy and a compassionate classroom, while suggested response activities extend understanding and strengthen connections between reading and writing.

Themes explored: family and relationships, courage, resilience, hope, war and conflict, survival, art and self-expression, freedom of expression, censorship, identity and belonging, faith, friendship, human rights, children’s experiences of war.
