Students will explore how the conjunction and can be used to connect ideas and build stronger, more interesting sentences. Using Space Explorers as the theme, students begin with simple ideas such as The astronaut floated and The astronaut looked at Earth, before learning how these can be joined: The astronaut floated in space and looked at Earth.

Across the week, students practise identifying ideas that belong together, using and to connect them, and checking that their completed sentences make sense. Through engaging space-based examples involving astronauts, rockets, planets and exploration, students build confidence in moving beyond single ideas and creating more developed sentences while maintaining clarity and meaning.

The pack follows a structured five-day progression with explicit teaching, modelled examples, guided practice and independent application. By the end of the week, students apply their learning in a Space Explorer writing task, using and purposefully to connect ideas and add interest to their writing.

Students begin by investigating how and can be used to join ideas that belong together, discovering how a conjunction can help writers move beyond expressing one idea at a time. They explore examples within a Space Explorers theme, identifying the ideas on either side of and before practising joining related ideas to create smooth, meaningful sentences.

As the week progresses, students begin bringing together their cumulative sentence learning. They make choices about which ideas belong together and use and purposefully rather than simply adding it between unrelated thoughts. By Day 4, students apply their skills within an authentic Space Explorer Mission Log context, transforming simple mission notes into connected sentences while drawing on previous learning about complete sentences, describing words, action words, where details and when details alongside their new understanding of joining ideas with and.
