Description

Help students build richer, clearer sentences and develop greater control over the details they include through this engaging five-day Sentence Explorations pack focusing on Adding When Details.

Designed for Years 3–4, this pack helps young writers understand that effective sentences can tell readers not only what happened and where it happened, but also when it happened. Through the engaging theme of Pirates, students explore how carefully chosen time details can make events easier to picture and bring their writing to life.

Across five carefully structured lessons, students progress from identifying when details in sentences to adding their own and making increasingly purposeful choices about which details work best. Through explicit teaching, guided practice and independent application, students learn to ask the simple but powerful question: When did it happen?

This pack includes:

  • Five days of structured sentence instruction
  • Explicit WALTs and success criteria
  • Clear teacher modelling (I Do)
  • Guided practice activities (We Do)
  • Independent application tasks (You Do)
  • Daily reflection prompts
  • Vocabulary banks
  • Cumulative learning reminders
  • Final independent writing task
  • Simple margin marking codes for feedback

Perfect for:

  • Whole-class writing lessons
  • Structured Literacy programmes
  • Literacy rotations
  • Independent literacy tasks
  • Small group teaching
  • Writing intervention
  • Sentence fluency development

Students begin by investigating when details such as at sunrise, during the storm and late at night, discovering how these additions give readers useful information about the timing of an event. They then practise adding when details to their own simple sentences before comparing vague choices such as sometime or later with more precise details that create a stronger picture.

As the week progresses, students begin bringing together their cumulative sentence learning. By Day 4, they apply their skills within an authentic Pirate Logbook context, transforming simple notes into more detailed entries while drawing on previous learning about complete sentences, describing words, action words and where details alongside their new understanding of when details.

Key Learning: Students explore how when details can add useful information by telling the reader when an action or event takes place. They progress from identifying when details to adding their own, comparing different choices and selecting details that create a clearer picture. As the week progresses, students combine when details with previously learned sentence-building tools, including describing words, action words and where details. Importantly, students learn that effective sentence expansion is not simply about adding more words – it is about choosing details that help the reader understand and imagine what is happening.
