A well ordered classroom with appropriate displays can be one of our most important aids for effective learning. It provides a stimulating environment which motivates our pupils and encourages them to learn.
I am not advocating putting ‘just anything’ on the classroom walls to fill space, in other words display for the sake of display. I am suggesting that carefully planned displays, displays with a purpose, can be a valuable tool. Of course displays can take different forms: children love to see their work displayed and most of them will consider it a form of praise; children learn from displays which teach them new things or remind them of lessons already taught; and rules displayed in the classroom also act as a reminder.
I believe that a well managed classroom also encourages good behaviour. The children are more likely to want to work if they are content in their learning environment. They will know where to find the things they need throughout the school day and they may also learn to better respect the school rules and their classroom.
Naturally a well ordered classroom must be maintained, which takes time and effort. However I think it is time well spent – we may never know what far reaching effects if has on our pupils.
