Today is a special day, not for everybody but for my family it is most definitely a special day. It is a day when we remember moving house, from a large city where we had lived for nine years to a small town. Of course today is a ‘normal’ day for most people, and not a day to celebrate, but to us it is important.

It has occurred to me today that we should remember to celebrate the special days in the lives of our pupils. We can be so focussed on curriculum, assessment and progression that we forget to remember the important days. Many of us remember birthdays, a day long awaited by most children, but there are other, unplanned days, such as the day when you lose a tooth, when you have special visitors, when you’ve been somewhere exciting, when you’ve won something, when a baby brother or sister is born and the list goes on. These are just a few examples of childhood experiences which, in my opinion, need celebrating. It doesn’t take long to remember these things but it makes the world of difference to our children.
