When I entered into the wonderful world of teacher training I don’t think I appreciated just how flexible I would have to be. Of course I don’t mean physically flexible, for if that were the case I would now be failing miserably! No, I refer to the ability to ‘go with the flow’, to be able to change our plans, sometimes with little or no prior warning.
Naturally we plan our lessons in order to cover the curriculum and taking into account each child’s strengths and weaknesses. We set targets and plan interventions, and we do our utmost to meet our own expectations and those of the school, the governing body, parents and indeed the government…but children are people and any job involving people requires a level of flexibility.
Our job isn’t boring and no two days are the same. Children will say things and do things we don’t expect and we will have to change our schedules for any number of reasons, especially at this time of the year. Teaching is a challenge, with an unpredictable edge and untold number of stumbling blocks to overcome. There will be days when we just have to take a deep breath and hold to the popular motto, ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’.
