Happy New Year!
No I haven’t lost track of time and I realise that it isn’t January. However it is September and for teachers and their pupils this is a new year.
We can plan ahead for our new classes but a new academic year will undoubtedly have uncertainties. We may know names, we may even be able to put faces to those names and we may have been given ‘helpful’ information by other members of staff…but with the best will in the world we won’t really know all of our pupils. Of course we must get to know them if we are going to plan effectively and set individual targets.
On the other hand a new school year brings opportunities. Meeting a new class is an exciting, if daunting, prospect. Certainly at primary school the majority of children arrive in September eager to learn and there is an air of expectancy, although I am well aware that some children seem to forget all that they’ve learnt over their six week break. Many will come into school on the first day with new uniforms and fresh faced after their summer holidays.
At the start of this new year let’s concentrate on the opportunities it brings rather than the uncertainties. Happy New Year!
